The Tell-Tale Signs Your Cooling System May Need Repair

There are several ways to know if you need air conditioner repair services. When any of these signs appear, don’t hesitate to call Watts to schedule our reliable air conditioning repair services.
The sooner your system is repaired, the easier and less expensive the air conditioner repair service will be.

Sure signs your air conditioning system needs repair service:

  • If the air coming through your vents isn’t cold enough
  • If there is less or no airflow than normal
  • If you notice musty smells
  • If you hear strange noises like rattling, grinding, or whistling
  • If your energy bills have increased without explanation
  • If your AC is leaking condensation or refrigerant
  • If the temperature of your home doesn’t match the thermostat
  • If you notice different temperatures in separate areas of your home

Factors to Consider When Replacing Your AC Unit

Air conditioners don’t last forever! Even the highest quality systems need to be replaced eventually. While today’s new high-efficiency air conditioners can reduce your utility bills, repair services can add life to your current system. So—how do you decide which is best for you?

Air Conditioning System Age

Most air conditioners last around 15-20 years, though some systems may last even longer. Knowing the age of your system can help you decide whether it makes sense to repair a newer unit or replace an older system.

Time In Home

If you’re living in your forever home and will get the most out of a new system, replacement may be your best option. However, if you know you will be moving in the near future, repair services may make more sense.

HVAC Energy Efficiency

An increase in your utility bills can be a sign of lower system efficiency, which may mean it’s time for an upgrade, especially if your system is older.

Cool Air Output

If your AC unit is not producing cool enough air or if the air stream is weak, it’s a good idea to have a technician take a look to see if a repair is necessary, or if you’re in need of a new AC unit.

Strange Noises from Your AC Unit

If your system is older, it’s probably working harder. This can lead to rattling, banging, or popping noises. If you catch it early, repair can help, but replacement is also a good option for older units making strange noises.

Still not sure? Watts’ experienced HVAC consultants can examine your air conditioner and help you determine if air conditioner repair or replacement is the best solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my air conditioner blowing hot air?

There are many reasons why your AC may begin to blow hot air. The filter could be clogged, blocking airways. The outside unit that removes hot air could be covered, stopping the release of cold air. Your system may also have low refrigerant, or there may be a mechanical or electrical issue that needs to be repaired. One small thing to check: is that your thermostat is actually on “cool?” (Sometimes people accidentally click “heat”!)

What should I do if my AC is leaking water?

Turn the AC unit off immediately, and also turn off the breaker to prevent electrical hazards. Check or replace the filter, and look at the drain pan for cracks, rust, or leaks. You can also clear the drain line outside. However, always call an HVAC repair company to help with any of these issues if you are not sure of what to do, or if you can’t identify the source of the leak.

Can you make my AC cool better?

We can check your AC unit for refrigerant leaks, clear clogged drain lines, look at filters, and verify electrical connections to help better cool your home and manage air flow. Proper maintenance is important in keeping you comfortably cool!

If I set up an air conditioning repair service, but it’s just maintenance that is needed, how does that work?

If no repair is needed, we’ll perform maintenance on your system. A diagnostic fee may apply to confirm that the system is not damaged or broken.

Do you provide after hours or service on the weekend?

Yes! We understand that AC failures don’t always happen during business hours. Our call center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist you with urgent repairs. For medically necessary cooling emergencies, we prioritize a rapid response to ensure your safety and comfort. For all other urgent issues, we aim to have a technician at your door by the next business day.

Do you guarantee your repairs?

Our skilled technicians perform their work with the highest quality of effort. While we can’t guarantee what may happen after we leave a home, we are always available to help our customers find solutions to keep cool. When they’re available, we offer extended warranties for additional protection on newly installed systems.
